    Delegates from six West African countries met in Ghana's capital, Accra, this week to discuss plans for a regional telecommunications network.

    The countries represented at the meeting were all members of the Pan-African Telecommunications Network--Dahomey, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierre Leone and Togo.

    The meeting began on Monday (17 April) and last two days.

    SYNOPSIS: State House in Ghana's capital, Accra, was the meeting place on Monday for delegates from six West African countries who are looking at ways of bringing their countries closer together through telecommunications. Ghana's General Amenu--the host country's Commissioner for Transport and Communications--opened the meeting. He told delegates that the plans they are making for the establishment of a West African telecommunications network would help to enhance international understanding and peace among African nations, and with the rest of the world. General Amenu also sees the network having a beneficial effect in bringing closer economic integration to the region.

    The Director of the West African Telecommunications project is Mr. Lars Engvall--who also spoke during the opening session. The meeting lasted two days. The six countries were represented by seventeen telecommunications experts. Their discussions are expected to lead to a rapid improvement in communication links among the nations of West Africa.
