    MADAME NHU ARRIVED IN PARIS ON SUNDAY AND WILL BE FLYING TO NEW YORK ON FRIDAY TO ATTEND THE U.N. GENERAL ASSEMBLY. WITH HER IN PARIS IS HER DAUGHTER.

    THE DEMONSTRATIONS, WHICH HAVE NOT MATERIALISED, WERE EXPECTED TO COME FROM THE THOUSANDS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE LIVING IN FRANCE.

    MADAME NHU'S PRESENCE IN PAIRS HAS BEEN DISCREETLY QUIET AND FREE OF THE TUMULT WHICH HAS MARKED TO-DATE HER CURRENT EUROPEAN TOUR.

    MEANWHILE, REPORTS FROM SAIGON STATE THAT THE U.S DEFENCE SECRETARY, MR ROBERT McNAMARA, HAS DELAYED HIS RETURN TO WASHINGTON. HE'S IN SOUTH VIETNAM ON A FACT-FINDING COMMISSION. HIS REPORT TO PRESIDENT KENNEDY IS EXPECTED TO DETERMINE THE U.S. GOVERNMENT'S FUTURE ATTITUDE TO PRESIDENT DIEM.

    IN SOME QUARTERS IT HAS BEEN HINTED THAT THE AMERICANS ARE CONSIDERING A WITHDRAWAL. THEY HAVE 17,000 TROOPS THERE AND ARE SUBSIDING THE COUNTRY TO THE EXTENT OF GBP500,000 A DAY.
