    THE FUTURE OF THE CONFERENCE WAS LATER SAVED WHEN GHANA AGREED TO RELEASE THE MEN, COMPRISING OF GUINEA'S DELEGATION TO THE O.A.U. CONFERENCE.

    THE MEETING, BEING ATTENDED BY SIXTEEN AFRICAN NATIONS, WAS FORMALLY OPENED BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE ETHIOPIA.

    IN HIS OPENING ADDRESS THE ETHIOPIAN LEADER SAID THE DISPUTE BETWEEN GHANA AND GUINEA WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT ITEM ON THE AGENDA FOR THE CONFERENCE.

    IT IS NOT YET CERTAIN IF PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE OF GUINEA WILL ATTEND THE CONFERENCE. ONE REPORT SAID THAT THE GUINEAN LEADER HAD BEEN PERSUADED BY PRESIDENT NASSER OF EGYPT NOT TO BOYCOTT THE CONFERENCE. SEVEN NATIONS' DELEGATIONS HAVE THREATENED TO WITHDRAW UNLESS PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE ATTENDS. THEY ARE UNDERSTOOD TO INCLUDE ALGERIA, THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, SUDAN, MALI, TANZANIA, SOMALIA AND ZAMBIA.

    THE GHANIAN LEADER, GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, WHO ORDERED THE RELEASE OF THE GUINEAN DELEGATES, IS ATTENDING THE MEETING. GHANA HAS SAID THE GUINEANS WERE DETAINED IN ACCRA IN RETALIATION FOR THE DETENTION OF GHANIANS IN CONAKRY, THE GUINEAN CAPITAL.

    A SPECIAL O.A.U. COMMITTEE HAS UNDERTAKEN TO SEE THAT ANY GHANIANS WHO MIGHT BE HELD AGAINST THEIR WILL IN GUINEA ARE RELEASED.

    THE FIRST WORKING SSSION OF THE CONFERENCE, DUE TO HAVE BEGUN AFTER YESTERDAY'S FORMAL OPENING, IS NOW DUE TO BEGIN TOMORROW (MONDAY). IT IS THE FOURTH SUMMIT MEETING OF AFRICAN LEADERS. IT IS DUE TO END ON TUESDAY.
