    AT BA GIA IN THE HIGHLANDS OF SOUTH VIETNAM FIERCE FIGHTING HAS BEEN GOING ON BETWEEN SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES AND THE VIET CONG FOR THE PAST MONTH. VIET CONG FORCES LATE LAST WEEK OVERRAN THE MILITARY GARRISON AT BA GIA AFTER LAYING SIEGE TO IT FOR SOME TIME. IT WAS LATER RETAKEN BY GOVERNMENT FORCES, BUT ONLY WITH HEAVY LOSSES.

    THE VIET CONG BEGAN ANOTHER PUSH NEAR THE GARRISON EARLIER THIS WEEK. TWO HUNDRED GOVERNMENT TROOPS WERE KILLED, WOUNDED OR CAPTURED.

    AIRCRAFT BOMBARDED AREAS NEARBY BELIEVED TO BE OCCUPIED BY VIET CONG FORCES. RELIEF FORCES WERE ALSO BEING MOVED INTO THE AREA.

    A CAMERAMAN FLEW TO BA GIA THIS WEEK AND WAS TRAPPED THERE DURING A NIGHT SIEGE ON THE GARRISON BY THE VIET CONG. AT THE TIME THE GARRISON WAS DEFENDED BY ONLY EIGHTY MEN, FACING ABOUT ONE THOUSAND VIET CONG TROOPS.

    HELICOPTERS WERE BROUGHT IN, UNDER HEAVY FIRE FROM VIET CONG POSITIONS TO EVACUATE THE INJURED. THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM ON THE AIRCRAFT FOR ALL CIVILIANS, MANY OF WHOM SPENT THE NIGHT IN TRENCHES WITH THE SOLDIERS. ALL ABLE-BODIED MEN WERE ISSUED WITH RIFLES AND TOOK PART IN THE NIGHTLONG BATTLE TO DEFEND THE GARRISON.

    DURING THE BATTLE UNITED STATES AIRCRAFT FLEW OVER THE AREA BOMBING AND STRAFING VIET CONG POSITIONS.

    FIRING CONTINUED UNTIL DAWN, WHEN THERE WAS A LULL. THE VIET CONG HAD FAILED TO CAPTURE THE GARRISON ALTHOUGH A NUMBER OF TROOPS HAD MANAGED TO PENETRATE IT DURING THE NIGHT. CASUALTIES ON BOTH SIDES WERE HIGH.
