    In his role as Chancellor of Dar Es Salaam University Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere presented 700 graduates with their degrees and diplomas on Saturday (28 August).

    SYNOPSIS: The graduation ceremony was the sixth since the university was inaugurated in 1970. It was held outside the faculty of Engineering complex. The 1975-76 graduating class comprised students from the faculties of Law, Medicine, Environmental Health Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry, Arts, Education and Science.

    In the last six years President Nyerere has closely watched the progress of the university and its students. His title MWALIMO - means 'the teacher'. He has strongly encouraged Tanzania's youth to embrace all forms of education and is keen to see them enter tertiary institutions which will equip them to help in the development of their country. In conferring the diplomas, degrees and certificates he added his congratulations to the students for their application to their studies. Hundreds of families and friends mingled with university and government officials to witness the ceremony.

    For the third time int he university's history an honorary Law Doctorate was conferred. The recipient was the First Vice-President Aboud Jumbe. In 1973 similar degrees were presented to the former Chief Justice, P.T. Georges, and the then Chairman of University Council A.Y. Karimjee.
