HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF SOVIET TANKS OR ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES, WHICH HAD BEEN REPORTED TO BE IN THE ISLAND OR ON THE WAY.

    TWENTY-THOUSAND PEOPLE, MOSTLY GREEK CYPRIOTS, LINES THE STREETS TO CELEBRATE THE DAY TEN YEARS AGO WHEN THE EOKA RESISTANCE MOVEMENT BEGAN THE BATTLE FOR INDEPENDENCE. PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND GENERAL GRIVAS, NOW COMMANDER OF THE CYPRIOT NATIONAL GUARD, TOOK THE SALUTE.

    MUCH OF THE EQUIPMENT IN THE PARADE WAS CONVENTIONAL WORLD WAR TWO-TYPE SMALL ARMS. SQUADS OF THE NEWLY-FORMED CYPRUS NAVY AND AIR FORCE ALSO TOOK PART.
