  • Description

Two demonstrations of quite a different nature and character took place in Delhi, on Thursday (2 November) -- one protest by Indian students at the United States Embassy and the other by Arab and Palestinian students at the West German Embassy.

About 500 slogan-shouting Indian students protested at the U.S. Embassy demanding an end to alleged activities of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in India. The students, belonging to the Youth Congress, the youth wing of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's ruling Congress Party, were kept away from the Embassy itself by a strong force of Indian riot police.

The demonstration at the West German Embassy, on the other hand, was quite and orderly. A group of thirty-five Arab and Palestinian students marched silently to the Embassy to present a letter of protest against "inhuman acts and inarticulate torture" against Arab and Palestinian students and workers in West Germany. The protest was against policies initiated by the West German Government after the Arab guerrilla attack on members of the Israeli Olympic Team in Munich.

Two representatives were led into the Embassy by an official to formally present their letter of protest.
