  • Description

THE VISITING KING OF MALAYSIA, ON FEBRUARY 25 BLAMED THE COMMUNISTS FOR TURNING SOUTH-EAST ASIA FROM A "HAVEN OF PEACE" INTO A REGION OF DIFFICULTIES AND DISSENSION.

HE WAS SPEAKING AT CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY IN BANGKOK WHERE HE WAS CONFERRED AN HONORARY DOCTOR'S DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE.

THE KING SAID: "SOME DISSENSIONS ARE INTERNAL, DERIVING FROM SUBVERSION OR A FEELING OF INSECURITY. OTHERS ARE EXTERNAL, SPRINGING FROM DIFFERENCES OF VIEW, PRODUCING DISCORD AMONG NEIGHBOURS".

HE SAID MALAYSIA WAS GOING THROUGH A DIFFICULT PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT THROUGH THE SURPRISE AND DISAPPOINTMENT CAUSE BY BROKEN FAITH AND UNKEPT PROMISES OF OTHER NEAR NEIGHBOURS.

THROUGHOUT THESE TRIALS THAILAND HAD BEEN A FIRM AND A FAITHFUL FRIEND AND HAD UNDERTAKEN THE TASK OF MEDIATING THE MALAYSIAN DISPUTE WITH INDONESIA AND THE PHILIPPINES.

THAILAND AND MALAYSIA, HE SAID, REALISED THAT IN THE LONG TERM, CLOSE ECONOMIC SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CO-OPERATION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA WAS BASICALLY IMPORTANT FOR PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT.
