  • Description

FORMER GRAND PRIX DRIVER TREVOR TAYLOR HAD HIS SECOND MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY TODAY (SUNDAY) AT BRANDS HATCH IN THE U.K. WHEN HE WON THE BIG EVENT OF THE DAY, THE MELAWARE CUP. EARLIER HE HAD WON THE TOTAL CHAMPIONSHIP RACE.

TAYLOR WON THE MELAWARE CUP, A 30-LAP RACE FOR SINGLE-SEATER RACING AND SPORTS CARS OF UNLIMITED CAPACITY, WITH HIS LOTUS 47 IN A TIME OF 28 MINS 7 SECS -- A SPEED OF 79.38 MILES AN HOUR.

EVERY COMPETITOR IN THE RACE HAD TO MAKE AN ENFORCED PIT STOP AND CHANGE A SPARKING PLUG. MOST OF THE DRIVERS WAITED UNTIL WELL INTO THE RACE, BUT TAYLOR, IN A SHREWD TACTICAL MOVE, WENT IN AFTER THE FIRST LAP.

THIS PAID HANDSOME DIVIDENDS, AND HE FINISHED MORE THAN A QUARTER OF LAP AHEAD OF HIS NEAREST RIVALS. THE PRE-RACE FAVOURITE FOR THE CUP, TONY LANFRANCHI, WAS FORCED TO WITHDRAW HIS MERLIN FORD BECAUSE IT WAS NOT READY.

IN SECOND PLACE CAME MIKE BEUTERIN A REPCO BRABHAM FORD, AND THIRD WAS JEFF ROBERTS IN A MERLIN FORD.
