  • Description

UNITED STATES FORCES IN SOUTH VIETNAM ARE USING A PORTABLE HOSPITAL THAT CAN BE RUSHED TO BATTLE AREAS AND INFLATED TO PROVIDE FULL MEDICAL FACILITIES FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS.

THE HOSPITAL BUILDINGS ARE MADE UP OF THREE SEPARATE SECTIONS....A COMPACT UTILITY UNIT OPERATED BY A GAS TURBINE ENGINE, THE HOSPITAL BUILDINGS THEMSELVES, AND WHAT THE UNITED STATES AUTHORITIES DESCRIBE AS 'EXPANDABLES' - LABORATORY, PHARMACY AND OPERATING THEATRES.

THE BUILDINGS ARE BIG DOUBLE-WALLED HEMISPHERES MADE OF DACRON AND RUBBER. FIVE SECTIONS INFLATED AND JOINED TOGETHER PROVIDE A COMPLETE FIELD HOSPITAL, AIR CONDITIONED FOR COMFORT IN VIETNAM'S TROPICAL WEATHER.

OUR OFFICIAL FILM SHOWS ONE OF THE THREE INFLATABLE HOSPITALS BEING USED IN THE TAY NINH AREA OF SOUTH VIETNAM. IT IS STAFFED BY 30 DOCTORS AND NURSES AND HAS BEDS FOR 60 PATIENTS.

IT HAD BEEN FLOWN TO THE BATTLE AREA, AND SET UP IN A MATTER OF HOURS. ALL THE DELICATE LABORATORY AND THEATRE EQUIPMENT HAD BEEN FOLDED INSIDE THE INFLATABLE SECTIONS. IN THE EIGHT MONTHS SINCE THIS HOSPITAL WAS SET UP, IT HAS BEEN USED TO TREAT MORE THAN 5,000 PATIENTS AND MORE THAN 2,000 MAJOR OPERATIONS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED IN ITS THEATRE.
