    AIMAR STARTED IN THE RACE MORE THAN THREE WEEKS AGO ONLY AS A SUPPORT RIDER FOR THE FRENCH PROFESSIONAL, JACQUES ANQUETIL.

    EIGHTY RIDERS WERE LEFT IN TODAY'S FINAL STAGE, FROM ORLEANS TO PARIS - A DISTANCE OF 101 MILES (152 K.M.). IT WAS THE TWENTY SECOND LEG OF THE RACE WHICH HAS TAKEN THE RIDERS THROUGH 2,700 MILES (4,300 K.M.) OF FRANCE.

    AIMAR SEEMED ASSURED OF VICTORY BEFORE THE START OF TODAY'S FINAL STAGE. THE STAGE WAS CONDUCTED IN TWO PARTS - FROM ORLEAN TO RAMBOUILLET, AND A TIME TRIAL FROM RAMBOUILLET TO PARIS. HIS MAIN CHALLENGER, JUAN JANSSEN OF HOLLAND, WAS SECOND.

    THE YOUNG FRENCH RIDER HAS BEEN RACING AS A PROFESSIONAL FOR ONLY TWO SEASONS. HIS VICTORY IN THE TOUR DE FRANCE ASSURES HIM OF AN INCOME EQUIVALENT TO GBP20-THOUSAND STERLING DURING THE NEXT TWELVE MONTHS.
