Background: Police in Lima, Peru clashed with about one thousand students at University Plaza on 25 May. The students were seeking the resignation of Interior Minister Juan Languasco who controls the nation's police.
Police used tear gas, water cannon and mounted officers to disperse the students. The students threw rocks and shouted abuse. The demonstration was touched off by the soccer game riot that left more than 300 dead.
Before the violence broke out, officials were busy clearing away the wreckage left by the soccer stadium rioting and the night of violence that followed it.
