Background: Leaders of South Africa's black homelands met Prime Minister John Vorster in Pretoria on Friday (8 October).

SYNOPSIS: At the meeting, Mr. vorster rejected pleas from the Bantustans for a national multi-racial, convention on South Africa's race problems, and refused to consider the release of detained black leaders. The Prime Minister said he rejected the principle of a national conference as he could see no merit in the idea. With regard to the release of detained black leaders, he said he was not prepared, could not and would not interfere with the law. The call for a national convention to discuss the country's race problems was submitted to Mr. Vorster earlier this week. So far this year, more than 300 people, mainly blacks, have died in township violence in South Africa. Hundreds of others have been seriously injured.
