  • Description

The two-week-old strike by municipal workers in Ethiopia has ended following the Government's sacking of the Mayor Addis Ababa, Dr. Haile Giogis Workiaeh on Friday (12 April).

The government move came the day after the largest ever peaceful demonstration in the streets of the Ethiopian capital by more than 10.000 people. The strike by municipal workers had paralysed essential services in Addia Ababa such as garbage collection, and health authorities had expressed grave concern that epidemics might break out.

However the end of the municipal workers stoppage has not ended Ethiopia's industrial trouble. Bus and railway workers who stopped work several days ago paralysing the transport system have still to go back. There have been no customs checks at airports in Ethiopia since Thursday when customs and finance ministry employees work demanding an investigation of public coffers.

Addis Alaba's Deputy Mayor Mulugeta Sene Giorgis, was appointed Acting Lord Mayor by the Government. Rail and bus workers will hold further meetings to decide when to end their strike action.
