    VIETCONG SNIPERS WERE REPORTED ON THURSDAY TO BE STILL ACTIVE AROUND THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE TOWN OF SONG BE, CAPITAL OF PHUOC LONG PROVINCE, WHICH WAS ATTACKED TWO DAYS EARLIER I THE BIGGEST VIETCONG ASSAULT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. FOR SEVEN HOURS THEY FOUGHT A PITCHED BATTLE WITH GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND AMERICANS AS THEY OVER-RAN THE TOWN, WHICH IS 75 MILES NORTH EAST OF SAIGON.

    IN THEIR ATTACK, THE VIETCONG OCCUPIED FOR A TIME THE PHUOC BINH HEADQUARTERS OF THE GOVERNMENT FORCES, AND EVEN INVADED THE AMERICAN AIRCRAFT EVENTUALLY LAID A PROTECTIVE WALL OF NAPALM AROUND THE BELEAGUED COMPOUND.

    MONSOON RAIN AND LOW CLOUD HINDERED AIR ACTION AGAINST THE VIETCONG GENERALLY, BUT EVENTUALLY THE 'PLANES WERE ABLE TO DRIVE OFF THE INVADERS, WHICH WERE ESTIMATED AT REGIMENTAL STRENGTH. AMERICAN CASUALTIES WERE FIVE KILLED AND 13 WOUNDED, WHILE AT LEAST 15 GOVERNMENT TROOPS WERE KILLED AND ABOUT 40 WOUNDED.

    VIETCONG CASUALTIES WERE SAID TO BE HEAVY BUT AN EXACT FIGURE HAS NOT BEEN GIVEN.
