    A TURKISH ARMY CONTINGENT OF 330 TROOPS ARRIVED AT THE CYPRUS PORT OF FAMAGUSTA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO BELIEVE ANOTHER TURKISH CONTINGENT ALREADY ON THE ISLAND.THE TROOPS HAVE BEEN GUARDING A STRATEGIC ROAD OUTSIDE NICOSIA UNDER A TREATY WITH THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT.

    ALTHOUGH THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT HAS SAID IT NO LONGER REGARDS THE TREATY UNDER WHICH THE TURKISH TROOPS ARE ON THE ISLAND AS VALID IT WILL NOT OPPOSE REPLACEMENT OF THE FORCES BECAUSE OF AN 'ARDENT DESIRE TO SAFEGUARD PEACE'.HOWEVER, THE GOVERNMENT IS REPORTED TO HAVE TOLD TURKEY THAT ASSENT TO THE ROTATION SYSTEM SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS A PRECEDENT FOR THE FUTURE.

    THE TREATY WAS ORIGINALLY TIED TO A CONCESSION BY TURKEY UNDER WHICH AN IMPORTANT ROAD LINK BETWEEN NICOSIA AND KYRENIA WAS RE-OPENED LAST SEPTEMBER.

    TURKISH TROOPS ON THE ISLAND HAVE BEEN STATIONED AT A STRATEGIC POINT OF THE KYRENIA ROAD, NEAR A TURKISH ENCLAVE.

    ANOTHER ROAD BETWEEN NICOSIA AND KYRENIA, WHICH WILL BY-PASS THE TURKISH AREA, IS NOW BEING PLANNED.

    AS THE TURKISH TROOPS LANDED AT FAMAGUSTA THEY WERE MET BY MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE FORCE.THE DISEMBARKATION WAS ARRANGED BY THE TURKISH MILITARY COMMANDER IN CYPRUS, GENERAL TYMAYIA.

    MEANWHILE, THE IRISH UNITED NATIONS CONTINGENT IN CYPRUS IS NOT BE REPLACED WHEN THE CONTINGENT'S 650 TROOPS FINISH THEIR TOUR OF DUTY LATER THIS MONTH.THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE ON THE ISLAND WILL THEN NUMBER ABOUT 5,000.
