  • Description

Because of its situation at the mouths of the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Schelde, the great port of Rotterdam handles immense quantities of goods exported and imported by not only Holland but also other European countries linked to Rotterdam by their road, rail and water transport systems. It is estimated that on the average, throughout the year, 2,300 kg. of cargo are handled in Rotterdam every second of the 24 hours.

To help to deal with this immense and ever increasing volume of goods a great new project -- named Europort -- is in hand. Europort, a complex of docks, shipyards and industrial installations, is being built (work has only just been begun) on the island of Roozenburg, at Rotterdam. The Netherlands Government has invested 185 million Dutch guilders in the first phase of this huge undertaking which, when it has been completed, will provide jobs for 19,000 workers and make Rotterdam an even stronger competitor than it now is with Antwerp and Hamburg.
