  • Description

The first of five hundred foreign evacuees from the mid-western Nigerian ports of Warri and Sapale have begun arriving in Lagos.

The refugees include British and American nationals employed by oil companies in Nigeria. The evacuation follows the seizure of cities in the mid-west by forces of the breakaway eastern province, referred to as Biafra.

British officials say the evacuation of British nationals from the mid-west will continue for several days.

At least six hundred British nationals - men, women and children live in the mid-western areas of Nigeria.

The refugees, carried in two vessels, the Magcobar Satellite and the American Tide, gave graphic accounts of fighting between Biafra forces and Federal Nigerian troops during battles for the cities of Benin, Warri and Asaba. The battles in the mid-west were the first offensive actions by Biafran troops.

Meanwhile, in Lagos, Federal authorities have requested all Ibo tribesmen - who come from the Eastern Region - to register themselves at special centres in the Nigerian capital. The move is said to have been introduced for security reasons.

However, although there are believed to be thousands of Ibo's in Lagos, few have so far reported at registration centres.
