For the City of Venice, like any other big city, traffic is a major problem. The difference is that for Venice traffic is the gondolas and other watercraft that make their way through the city's crowded canals.
SYNOPSIS: Like so many other cities through the world, the Venetian authorities have dealt with the problem traffic congestion by instituting a one-way system on 17 of the city's canals.
Apart from the problem of congestion, it was complaints from the gondoliers over a long period of time that brought about the change.
They said the heavy wash from the growing number of motor-boat taxis was forcing them out of business. The lucrative tourist trade was being put off, people being unwilling to brave gondola rides made bumpy by speeding motor boars going the opposite direction. the gondoliers, in their colourful boats, are happy with he new arrangement.
But it hasn't been achieved without a struggle. over the past few years the gondoliers have staged a series of protests, often blocking the canals to all traffic to press their case. Now they are delighted at the implementation of the one way system.
