  • Description

Nationalists China broke off diplomatic relations with Canada on Tuesday (13 October) following Ottawa's announcement that it was recognising the People's Republic of China. Within hours of the Canadian announcement Taiwan's government offices in Ottawa and Vancouver were closed and the Taiwan Ambassador, Yu-chi Hsueh, had flown to New York.

Nationalist China has always threatened to break off diplomatic relations with any country which recognises the Peking government. A Statement issued by the Taiwan government said that Canada's recognition of Communist China was a "most unfriendly act".
