  • Description

The new consignment of Phantom fighter-bombers Greece has recently bought were officially blessed at the central Peloponese Air Force base on Saturday (21 April).

The aircrafts' arrival will not sooth Turkish fears that Greece is equipping an air base to strike at Turkey's Anatolian area. Relations between the two countries became strained recently by a dispute over oil rights in the Aegean.

Turkey and Greece have made military movements on their Thracian boarder. Both countries belong to NATO. Greece recently refused to join Turkey on a NATO exercise but NATO's Air Commander in south-east Europe, Vice Air Commodore Wilson, was at the ceremony. Other allied officers, Greek army chief General Bonanos and air force chief Vice Air Commodore Papenolaou, also attended.

There was a religious service at the base and Bishops Athanassios and Nicolaos blessed the 'planes before Greek pilots gave them a through aerobatic testing.

The Phantoms are part of a Greek General Staff policy to modernise the armed forces.
