  • Description

To aid European cooperation in atomic energy research is this atomic reactor opened Sept 29 at Seibersdorf, near Vienna, Austria.

The reactor, built by an American company for the International Atomic Energy Agency at present in annual conference in Vienna, now makes it possible to proceed from theoretical work to practical research and experiments. Its present output is 5000 kilowatts, to be raised after further development to 12000, or even 25000 kilowatts.

At the opening ceremony were delegates attending the annual conference including Mr. Molotov, USSR permanent representative with the Agency, and conference chairman Stirling Cole.

Austrian President Adolf Schaerf and Chancellor Raab opened the reactor after Franz Cardinal Koenig, Archbishop of Vienna, blessed it.

The reactor, completed in two and a half years, is of the conventional "swimming-pool" type reactor, consisting of fuel elements containing enriched uranium in an open water pool, the water serving as both cooler and protective shield.
