  • Description

Empress Farah Diba of Iran arrived in Peking on Monday (18 Sept) to a tumultuous welcome at the start of a state visit, which observers may have significant political undertones.

The Empress, accompanied by Iranian Prime Minister Amir Abbas Moveida, was greeted at the airport by Premier Chou En-lai and other Chinese leaders, and diplomats accredited in Peking.

As the motorcade drove to the state guest house at Jade Abyss Pool Park, more than 100,000 gaily dressed Chinese girls cheered and waved banners welcoming the Royal visitor.

The Empress is due to stay in China 10 days, during which she will tour the country while Iranian ministers confer with Chinese leaders.

Since the two countries established diplomatic relations ??? August last year, many friendly references to Iran and the Shah have appeared in the local press.

The increasingly warm relations between Iran and China have been seen as a possible counter-force to the Soviet Union's close ties with Iran's neighbour, Iraq. A treaty of friendship and mutual assistance was signed by these two countries last spring.

The Shah of Iran is known to be anxious to increase his country's international prestige, and Sino-Iranian relations have been further enhanced in the recent past by China's keen support of the efforts of oil-producing states in the Gulf and North Africa to secure higher prices for crude oil.
