At the United Nations on Tuesday (16 March) Mozambique asked for 49 million U.S. dollars (GBP24.5 million sterling) a year in international aid to compensate for losses it said it would suffer as a result of its full economic sanctions against Rhodesia.
The country's Foreign Minister, Mr Joaquim Chissano, said Rhodesia had tried to intimidate the Mozambique people by launching a series of invasions, culminating in an attack on border villages on the night of 23 February.
Mozambique's President Samora Machel announced on 3 March that his Government would apply full sanctions against Rhodesia.
