    MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE WERE OVERCOME BY SMOKE FROM A FIRE WHICH BROKE OUT IN AN UNDERGROUND TRAIN TUNNEL YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN NEW YORK.POLICE REPORTED THAT 112 PEOPLE HAD TO BE TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION, OF WHOM 8 WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FOR FURTHER MEDICAL ATTENTION.

    THE FIRE BROKE OUT IN THREE CARRIAGES OF AN UNOCCUPIED TRAIN IN A BROOKLYN STATION AND DENSE SMOKE SOON BEGAN ROLLING THROUGH THE TUNNELS.PASSENGERS LEFT UNDERGROUND TRAINS AT NEARBY STATIONS, AND THOUSANDS OF COMMUTERS WERE LEFT WITHOUT RUSH-HOUR SERVICE.

    FIREMEN WERE SOON ON THE SCENE TO DEAL WITH THE OUTBREAK; THEY FORCED UP VENTILATING SHAFT GRATINGS IN THE STREET TO GET DOWN TO THE FLAMES.THE FIREMEN ASSISTED SOME PASSENGERS TO ESCAPE THROUGH THE GRATINGS, AND THEN TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO THE FIRE WHICH THEY BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL WITHIN AN HOUR AND A HALF.
