Background: PRESIDENT SARAGAT OF ITALY CONFERRED TODAY (SATURDAY) WITH SOME OF THE COUNTRY'S PRINCIPAL POLITICIANS IN THE QUEST TO FIND A SUCCESSOR FOR SIGNOR ALDO MORO, THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER, WHO RESIGNED HIS CENTRE-LEFT COALITION GOVERNMENT LAST NIGHT.

THE CENTRE-LEFT GOVERNMENT, FORMED 18 MONTHS AGO, RESIGNED AFTER A DEFEAT IN PARLIAMENT ON A BILL TO ESTABLISH STATE-RUN KINDERGARTENS.

PRESIDENT SARAGAT APPEARS TO HAVE A NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVES. HE MAY ASK SIGNOR MORO TO LEAD A NEW GOVERNMENT; HE MAY ASK SIGNOR FANFANI TO TAKE OVER ADMINISTRATION; OR, HE COULD CALL A GENERAL ELECTION.

HOWEVER, WHAT EVER HIS DECISION THE FORMATION OF A NEW CENTRE-LEFT GOVERNMENT WILL POSSIBLY PROVE A SLOW AND DELICATE TASK.

THE COALITION FELL, ACCORDING TO POLITICAL ANALYSTS, BECAUSE NEARLY ALL THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT DEPUTIES IN THE COALITION VOTED AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT ON THE KINDERGARTEN BILL.

THE OTHER THREE PARTIES FORMING THE COALITION -- SOCIALISTS, SOCIAL DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS -- HAVE AGREED TO FORM A UNITED FRONT TO OPPOSE THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS IN NEGOTIATIONS FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT. THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS MAKE UP ITALY'S LARGEST PARTY, OCCUPYING 259 SEATS IN THE 630-SEAT CHAMBER, AND A DEMOCRATIC COALITION WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE PARTY'S PARTICIPATION.
