  • Description

NINETEEN YOUNG BOYS DROWNED YESTERDAY (18 JULY) AFTER A RIVER SANDBANK ON WHICH THEY WERE PADDLING CAVED IN. THE TRAGEDY OCCURRED ON THE LOIRE RIVER NEAR ANGERS IN WESTERN FRANCE.

THE BOYS, 13 TO 14 YEARS OLD, WERE ON AN OUTING FROM A SCHOOL HOLIDAY CAMP. THEY WERE PART OF A GROUP OF 65 CITY CHILDREN SPENDING A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY. ABOUT HALF OF THEM DECIDED TO PICK WILD STRAWBERRIES IN THE WOODS WHILE 29 WENT FOR A SWIM.

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED SO FAST THAT TEACHERS WERE ABLE TO SAVE ONLY 10 OF THEM. THE OTHERS WERE HALF BURIED IN SWIRLING SAND AND GRAVEL AND WERE SUCKED DOWN THE RAGING VORTEX AS THE BANK COLLAPSED.

ONE OF THE TEACHERS, ALL QUALIFIED LIVE-SAVERS, SAID LATER THAT THEY HAD BATHED ALL WEEK IN THE SAME SPOT AND IT HAD SEEMED FIRM.

WHEN DIVERS REACHED SOME OF THE CHILDREN THEY WERE STILL CLUTCHING EACH OTHER'S HANDS.
