    The trial of retired General Cemal Madanoglu and 22 other people charged with plotting to overthrow the Government in Turkey began before a military court in Istanbul on Wednesday (7 February).

    Madanoglu is 66 and was an original member of the National Unity Committee which took power in Turkey after the 1960 coup which ousted the Menderss regime.

    Madanogle and the 22 others charged all face possible prison sentences of up to 12 years, and even a possibility of exile.

    Thirty-two people were originally charged, but the prosecutor announced that proceedings against seven of them would not go ahead. The absence of the remaining two man has not been explained.

    SYNOPSIS: The military trial of retired General Cemal Madanoglu opened on Wednesday in Istanbul.

    The sixty-year-year-old General and twenty-two other people are charged with plotting to overthrow the constitutional form of Government to create a single party revolutionary state. They face prison sentences of up to twelve years, or exile from Turkey. Because of the complicated nature of the charges, the trial could go on for two weeks or more.

    Thirty-two people were charged originally, but the prosecutor told the court that proceedings against seven of the men would not go ahead.

    No official reason was given for the absence of two defendants whose names have been dropped from the case.
