  • Description

Although there are still conflicting reports about the success of the South Vietnamese drive along Highway 13, the main road from Saigon to Sinh Long province, Monday's thrust has been seen as a good step towards smashing the communist road blocks along the route northwest.

The South Vietnamese have been steadily gaining ground along the road, although communist resistance has been relatively week compared with the massive they launched into areas south of the Demilitarised Zone two weeks ago.

Troops investigating the jungle fringes after airstrikes and artillery bombardments captured a wounded North Vietnamese soldier on Monday. Ho was closely questioned about the objectives and locations of communist troops in the area, but no information was released to newsmen.

One American general told newsmen in Saigon later on Monday that the communist forces which had swept down Highway 13 in the initial stages of the present offensive were now badly battered. He also said most of the communists were now on the run back into the Khmer Republic, but later news indicates the North Vietnamese may have moved now troop concentrations into the country.
