  • Description

On Wimbledon's Centre Court today (Friday, 29 June), Julie Heldman of New York failed to repeat a recent win over her rival from Fort Lauderdale, California, Chris Evert. She went down to the eighteen-year-old fourth seed 6-3, 6-1.

The crucial period of the match came when Miss Evert was two games to three down in the first set. She fought back and won eight games in a row, moving to four games to nil up in the second set.

The match must have literally been the most colourful ever seen on the famous centre court where players are under orders to wear predominately white. Miss Evert's dress was trimmed with grass-green and she wore a green ribbon in her plaited hair.

The dark-haired Miss Heldman sported a startling white jockey cap with a large pink peak. Her dress was liberally trimmed with strawberry pink and red.
