  • Description

Argentina won the American zone Davis Cup tennis final in Buenos Aires on Sunday (1 May) by beating the United States by three matches to two.

SYNOPSIS: The first win came for the United States in the doubles on Friday (29 April). Then Fred McNair and Sherwood Stewart, seen here in the light shirts at the far end of the court, had little difficulty in beating Ricardo Cano and Elio Alvarez.

The Argentineans had practically conceded the match when they decided to rest their number one player, Guillermo Vilas. Although they won this point, Cano and Alvarez provided few problems for the United States players.

A large crowd turned up to cheer, and they sweltered in the extreme heat. But the weather seemed to have little effect on the players and rallies were often long and keenly contested.

Cano is Argentina's weaker player, but the day before he had shocked Dick Stockton of the United States in the singles match by winning after a good struggle.

Argentina has never beaten the United States in a zone final before and the large home crowd was delighted with the calibre of tennis it saw during the competition.

The United States finally won this match by 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. But it wasn't good enough and Argentina will now meet Australia in an inter-zone semi-final.
