  • Description

LEADERS OF COMMUNIST PARTIES IN 25 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES YESTERDAY SIGNED A DOCUMENT AIMED AT BRINGING ABOUT THE DISSOLUTION IF NATO IN 1969, WHEN ANY MEMBER OF THE ALLIANCE WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE IT AT ONE YEARS' NOTICE. THE SIGNING CAME AT THE END OF A MEETING OF EUROPE'S COMMUNISTS IN THE FORMER ROYAL SPA OF KARLOVY VARY.

SOME COMMUNIST PARTIES BOYCOTTED THE MEETING, CALLED BY THE SOVIET UNION FOR ALL EUROPEAN PARTIES. AMONG THOSE WHO DID NOT ATTEND WERE YUGOSLAVIA, AND RUMANIA AND ALBANIA.

THE MEETING ENDED YESTERDAY, A DAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. OFFICIALS SAID THIS WAS BECAUSE THE PARTICIPATING DELEGATES HAD FOUND AGREEMENT MORE EASILY THAN ANTICIPATED.

THE DECLARATION SIGNED BY THE KARLOVY VARY DELEGATES AIM AT GETTING BACKING THROUGHOUT EUROPE FOR THE DISSOLUTION OF NATO. TO THIS END, IT IS EXPECTED THAT ANOTHER EUROPEAN CONFERENCE WILL BE CALLED NEXT YEAR. SPECIFICALLY TO ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE NATIONS TO LEAVE THE NATO ALLIANCE WHEN THEY ARE ABLE TO DO SO IN 1969.
