  • Description

Syria's economic development was placed squarely in the hands of the Soviet Union with the signing in Damascus of an agreement whereby technicians, experts, machinery and materials would be provided by the Soviets for road-building, railways, dams, irrigation, electrification and land reclamation.

No reference was made to the size of the economic aid to be provided but informed sources placed it at one hundred million dollars over a period of seven years.

Shots show Syrians and Russians around the conference table of Serail (pronounced Sir Eye) Palace from which the Ottoman Turks and French governed the country for many decades.

At the centre of the table, wearing glasses is the bald and portly Premier Sabri el Assali. On his right is the head of the Soviet delegation, P.V. Nikitin. Next to Nikitin is Soviet charge d'affaires, Nikoli Vassilenko. On Assali's left is acting defence minister Khaled el Azm.
