  • Description

French Foreign Minister Louis de Guiringaud arrived in Kenya on Thursday (11 August) at the start of a ten-day tour aimed at widening France's influence in Africa.

SYNOPSIS: The French Foreign Minister held formal talks on Friday (12 August) with Kenyan Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi in Nairobi. During a 45-minute meeting, the Minister said the purpose of his visit to Kenya as well as to Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania, was to meet African leaders, listen to their views and explain France's foreign policies. After the meeting, a Kenyan official said Mr. De Guiringaud told Vice-President Moi that France's policy in Africa was misunderstood and misrepresented. The Foreign Minister's visit to non-French speaking African countries marks a shift in French foreign policy. In the past, France has confined its interest mainly to its former colonies.

The same day, talks were also held in Nairobi between the Kenyan Vice-President and the Chief of Staff of Nigeria's Supreme Headquarters, Brigadier Shehu Musa Yar-Adua. the Brigadier, who was in Nairobi on a holiday, was accompanied at the talks by his country's Ambassador to Kenya.
