  • Description

THE CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF VENEZUELA (UCV) IN CARACAS WAS THE CENTRE LAST WEEK OF FOUR DAYS OF VIOLENT RIOTING AND ARSON BY STUDENT (AND SOME NON-STUDENT) MEMBERS OF THE OUTLAWED LEFTIST REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT (MIR). LATE ON FRIDAY (OCTOBER 31) TWO BATTALIONS OF THE CRACK ARMY HUNTERS DIVISION MOVED IN TO QUELL THE RIOTING AFTER THE POLICE HAD BEEN UNABLE TO DO SO.

THE RIOTING -- WHICH HAS NOT BEEN CONFINED TO CARACAS BUT HAS SWEPT THROUGH THE COUNTRY -- ERUPTED ON TUESDAY NIGHT (OCTOBER 28), WITH THE STUDENTS PROTESTING AGAINST THE ALLEGED KILLING OF FELLOW STUDENTS LUIS FERNANDEZ BY THE ARMY WHILE BEING TORTURED EARLIER LAST MONTH.

THE MILITANT GROUP TOOK OVER THE CENTRAL BUILDING OF THE UNIVERSITY AND HELD OUT AGAINST 2,000 ARMED POLICE. CLASSES WERE SUSPENDED AND THE INTERIOR MINISTRY THREATENED SEVERE MEASURES AGAINST THE MIR IF THEY DID NOT STOP FIGHTING. BUT TO NO AVAIL. BY THE END OF FRIDAY, ONE STUDENT HAD BEEN KILLED, 25 POLICE AND STUDENTS WOUNDED, AND AT LEAST 50 PEOPLE ARRESTED.

THEN PRESIDENT RAFAEL CALDERA ORDERED THE MILITARY INTERVENTION AND THE ARMY HUNTERS MOVED IN. BY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) EVENING, THEY WERE IN CONTROL OF THE UNIVERSITY AND REPORTED TO HAVE CAPTURED THE HARD CORE OF THE MILITANT STUDENT CONTINGENT STILL HOLDING OUT ON THE CAMPUS. IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT THE ARMY HAD BEEN CALLED IN WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT PROOF EXISTED OF A LINK BETWEEN THE STUDENT DISTURBANCES AND ANTI-GOVERNMENT GUERRILLA ACTIVITIES.
