  • Description

Turkish Foreign Minister Zorlu, held a press conference in Istanbul, May 1, when he referred to the anti-Government demonstrations which have been repressed by troops and tanks.

He said precautions were necessary to prevent further violence and declared that the vast majority of the Turkish people were solidly behind the Government.

Mr. Zorlu said that since the 1950 elections, the Opposition Peoples Party had refused to accept its minority position in the country and had recently adopted illegal and subversive methods. Asked by a correspondent why the Government had not published the results of the 1957 elections, he replied that if they had done so the Opposition would have used the figures to prove that they had a majority in the country.
