  • Description

A South African Government Minister set foot in Kenya on Wednesday (September 19) for the first time since Kenyan independence was established yen years ago. He is Mr. Nicolaas Diederichs, South Africa's Minister of Finance, who has travelled to Nairobi to attend next week's annual meeting of the Governors of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Observers described Mr. Diederichs' reception on his arrival as 'polite but chilly'. President Jomo Kenyatta's government has declared that as host to this important international meeting it will allow South African delegates to 'come and work unhindered'. But the only official on hand to greet Mr. Diederichs, was the Director of Nairobi airport.

However, the South African Minister received plenty of attention from waiting newsmen, and the following is an excerpt from his airport press conference, as included in our film coverage.
