    FLAGS FLEW AT HALF MAST IN SWEDEN, SEPT 28, AS A PAN-AMERICAN DC-7 AIRLINER LANDED AT STOCKHOLM'S BROMMA AIRPORT, CARRYING THE COFFINS OF MR. HAMMARSKJOELD AND HIS COMPANIONS WHO WERE KILLED IN THE SEPT 18 AIR CRASH NEAR NDOLA, NORTHERN RHODESIA.

    AT A CEREMONY TWO HOURS LATER, WREATHS WERE PLACED ON THE 10 COFFINS WITH THE BODIES ON THE LATE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL, HIS ADVISER ON AFRICAN AFFAIRS, AN AMERICAN AND A CANADIAN SECRETARY, FRENCH, IRISH AND AMERICAN SECURITY GUARDS, AND THREE SWEDISH SOLDIERS. THE FIVE COFFINS OF THE SWEDISH CREW OF MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S PLANE HAD BEEN TAKEN OFF AT MALMO AIRPORT.

    TEN WREATHS FROM KING GUSTAF OF SWEDEN WERE LAID BY JOHAN BECK-FRIIS, SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE LATE SECRETARY-GENERAL, AND 10 FROM THE SWEDISH GOVERNMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, DR. ERLANDER. OTHER TRIBUTES CAME FROM MEMBERS OF THE BEREAVED FAMILIES AND FROM REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EMBASSIES OF CANADA, HAITI, THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, AND THE UNITED STATES, THE SWEDISH UNITED NATIONS SOLDIERS AND MEMBERS OF THE RED CROSS FORMED A GUARD OF HONOUR.

    AFTERWARDS MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S COFFIN, FOLLOWED ONLY BY HIS RELATIVES, WAS TAKEN TO UPPSALA CATHEDRAL FOR THE STATE FUNERAL ON SEPT 29. THE BODIES OF THE THREE SWEDISH SOLDIERS WERE TRANSFERRED TO THEIR HOME TOWNS. THE OTHER VICTIMS WERE TO BE FLOWN HOME THE FOLLOWING DAY.
