  • Description

American Astronauts L.Gordon Cooper Jr.and Charles Conrad Jr boarded their GT-5 (Gemini - Titan Five) spacecraft Thursday morning (19 August) for a flight that never happened.A frustrating series of delays forced postponement of the launch.

The launch had originally been scheduled for 10:00 am, eastern daylight time. However a problem with loading liquid hydrogen into the spacecraft's fuel cells developed and the countdown was halted five hours before the launch. It was resumed again after a three hour delay, which gave the astronauts a little extra sleep.

The two men suited up and were driven out to the launch pad in the customary air conditioned truck. They rode up in the elevator to the "white room" atop the erector where they boarded the capsule. The countdown proceeded smoothly with no delay until 1:08 pm, eastern daylight time, ten minutes before launch. Then radio signals from a telemetry system failed. The troubled appeared to be in a commutator, an electronic switch which changes from one radio channel to another. Then a backup system was switched on, it worked properly, and when the primary system was turned on again, it worked too.Technicians asked for an extra fifteen minutes to check the system.

At the point, a thunderstorm moved over the Cape and rain drenched the launch area.Cooper and Conrad told the control centre they were still anxious to go, our moments later, the launch was cancelled.

It was not immediately announced when the next attempt would be.
