  • Description

POLICE AND RESCUE TEAMS HAVE BEEN ALERTED IN SOME SUBURBS OF PARIS AS THE RAIN SWOLLEN RIVER SEINE THREATENS TO RISE AND CAUSE FURTHER FLOODING. THE SUN CAME OUT TODAY (THURSDAY) AND OFFICIALS ARE WORRIED THAT IT WILL MELT SNOW WHICH HAS FALLEN OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS. ALREADY THE RIVER HAS REACHED A HEIGHT 16 FEET (5 METRES) ABOVE NORMAL, FLOODING THE SOUTHERN PARIS SUBURB OF VILLENEUVE-SAINT-GEORGES.

MORE THAN 100 HOMES HAVE BEEN FLOODED IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF PARIS AND FURTHER DOWNSTREAM ANOTHER 95 ARE UNDER WATER. SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED, TRAIN SERVICES DISRUPTED AND ROADS CUT.

LONG RANGE WEATHER FORECASTS LEAD OFFICIALS TO BELIEVE THAT THE WORST IS OVER...AT LEAST AS FAR AS PARIS IS CONCERNED. BUT FURTHER DOWN-STREAM LEVEES ARE BEING BUILT FOLLOWING PREDICTIONS THAT THE SEINE COULD REACH A CRITICAL LEVEL.

IN WESTERN FRANCE, THE CONTINUED RAINS HAVE BROUGHT DOWN A MEDIEVAL TOWER THAT HAS STOOD FOR NEARLY NINE CENTURIES. NO CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED AS A RESULT OF THE FLOODS, BUT DAMAGE IS EXPECTED TO RUN INTO MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS.
