  • Description

Italy's Christian Democrat Party, which has enjoyed unbroken power since World War Two, has made a striking comeback in the country's general election. Confounding forecasts that their party would loss ground to the nee-fascist Italian Social Movement, the Christian Democrats had increased their share of the poll by the halfway stage of vote counting tonight (Monday).

The nee-fascists also showed considerable early gains, though the predicted landslide in their favour failed to materialise. The Communist Party, however, was losing votes for the first time in any post-war election.

From the Rome polling station where President Giovanni leone had cast his vote, Visnews cameraman Pino Giambattista filmed the start of the vote counting procedure.
