    President Macros of the Philippines imposed strict martial law on the country on Saturday (23 September) as he spoke of subversive elements intending to overthrow the government with help from foreign powers.

    Filipinos spent the rest of the weekend under strict curfew and an almost total communications ban, although by Monday (25 September) one newspaper, the Daily Express, appeared on the streets.

    Imposition of martial law followed months of increased activity by the dissident New People's Army, an extreme left-wing group. Several public and private installations were damaged by bomb attacks.

    The Philippine Government announced that 49 people were being held under arrest. Many of these were senior politicians and government officials, including Senator Benigno Aquino, secretary general of the opposition Liberal party.

    SYNOPSIS: Manila is a city under strict martial law.....only one newspaper made the streets on Monday, after President Macros clamped down on what he described as a subversive plot to overthrow his government. Nevertheless life goes on as normal for Filipinos, temporarily cut off from the outside world - although the President's palace remains under strict guard. Imposing of martial law followed several months of activity by the left-wing New People's Army.

    Forty-nine people are being held under arrest by President Macros' government, including opposition Liberal Party secretary-general Aquino. Young army cadets parade and train publicly in Manila, but the university remains closed. Students have bene amongst the most active opponents of the Macros regime.
