  • Description

Wellwishers of the Japanese Royal Household and newsfilm cameramen had a first glimpse Mar 12 of Japan's new infant heir, 18 day-old Prince Hiro, in the arms of his mother Crown Princess Michiko as they returned from the royal maternity room in the Imperial Household Hospital to the Palace in Tokyo.

The royal baby when born was washed in a silver basin and dressed in swaddling clothes made by the Crown Princess. He was then placed in a cradle used for his father, Crown Prince Akihito.

The baby is next in succession after Prince Akihito, 26. He is the Emperor's sixth grandchild but will be the only one with a title as the Emperor's daughters and their husbands became commoners under the post-war reform of the Imperial household.

The engagement and marriage in April last year of the Princess - formerly Miss Michiko Shoda - created a "Michi boom", named after her: song writers wove lyrics around the couple and for the rest of the year new-born baby girls became Michiko in name.
