As the Middle East disengagement pact was being signed on Friday (18 January), Egypt's President Anwar Sadat was hailing his country's new agreement with Israel as "a turning point in the history of the area."
He made his statement at Aswan during his fourth round of talks with United States peace mediator, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and just before setting out on a six-day tour of Arab capitals to explain ???e Egyptian disengagement pact with Israel. Among the countries he will visit is Syria -- Egypt's partner in the October War against Israel.

While in Damascus, President Sadat will reportedly discuss with Syrian President Hafez al Assad Egyptian commitments to aid a disengagement of Syrian and Israeli forces along the Golan Heights.

Dr. Kissinger is also due in the Syrian capital this weekend, where he too is expected to try to negotiate a disengagement on the Golan Heights and a solution to the sensitive issue of Israeli prisoners of war still held in Syria.

During Friday's meeting with Dr. Kissinger in Aswan, President Sadat told newsmen that he hoped the agreement with Israel would lead to a permanent political settlement in the Middle East. He was also warm in his praise of the efforts of Dr. Kissinger and President Nixon:
