Late in the afternoon of 23 August, the National Association for the Advancement or Colore People staged a civil rights rally in Atlantic City. The expected 50,000 failed to materialize, there being about fifteen hundred in attendance. The crowd heard Aaron Henry, the spokesman for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party announce that the negro group will not accept a seating compromise offered by the Credentials Committee. He said his group has sufficient cotes--11--to bring the issue to the floor of the convention and force a floor fight over the question of whether the regular delegation from Mississippi should be seated or the rival, largely negro Freedom Democratic Party delegation. The Freedom group charges that Mississippi negroes were systematically excluded from the state's Democratic Party.
At he moment, the Credentials Committee has made no decision and is in recess. The matter has been turned over to a subcommittee, also in recess. A decision is promised Monday morning. It is expected to seat those Mississippi delegates who will pledge loyalty to the party and its candidates, and seat the Freedom people as fraternal delegation, with all the privileges, but no vote.
