  • Description

Kashmir -- disputed by India and Pakistan -- was the subject today (Saturday) of discussions in London between the British Prime Minister, Mr. Wilson and President Ayub Khan of Pakistan. The Pakistani leader conferred with Mr. Wilson for about one hour at No., 10 Downing Street. President Ayub Khan is on his way to New York to address the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The President is expected to raise the Kashmir issue in his address at the United Nations. Last September, differences between India and Pakistan over Kashmir flared into war -- continuing a 20-year-old dispute between the two countries.

On his arrival in London, President Ayub Khan issued a statement claiming that more than 120,000 people had fled from Indian-occupied territory in Kashmir across the ceasefire line into Southern Kashmir areas under Pakistan control. Kashmir, said the President was at the root of the India-Pakistan conflict and had to be solved if peace was to be preserved on the sub-Continent.

After today's talks with Mr. Wilson, President Ayub Khan will travel to West Germany for discussions with government leaders, before flying to the United States to meet President Johnson and address the U.N.
