A 22-year-old Brazilian girl today (Wednesday) set off to earn up to 50,000 sterling (120,000 dollars) as this year's Miss World. Brown-haired Miss Lucia Petterie, daughter of an army colonel from Rio de Janeiro, was the first Brazilian to win the 21-year-old contest.
Miss United Kingdom was second, with Miss Portugal third, Miss Guyana fourth and Miss Jamaica fifth.
SYNOPSIS: Demonstrators from the Women's Liberation Movement paraded outside London's Albert Hall last night as guests arrived for the finals of the 21st Miss World competition. But it was a small demonstration, with fewer taking part than the number of beautiful girls waiting to be judged inside the hall.
Fifty-six beautiful girls from the four corners of the earth had reached the final, each hoping to win the Miss World Title and the prize money, travel and adventure that go with the title. And the contest was watched by television viewers in many countries, including an estimated 30 million in Britain.
The judges had a difficult task, but finally the choice was made....
And the winner -- Miss Brazil, 22-year old Lucia Petterie, from Rio de Janeiro, the daughter of an army colonel. The new Miss World was crowned by the retiring Miss World, Jennifer Hosten of Grenada.
For Lucia it was the start of an exciting year. Second place was taken by Miss United Kingdom, with Miss Portugal third.
