    Background: KUALA, LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

England tasted victory and defeat in the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Championships on May 15. China had a convincing win over the England men's team in the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup. They took only 97 minutes to win their way to the finals against Indonesia. Han Jian took just eighteen minutes to defeat the English national champion, Andy Goode. Jian completely dominated the match and had Goode running around like a novice in his 15-3, 15-7 win. Yang Yang had a harder time against Englishman Steve Butler, winning 15-8, 15-9 in thirty-seven minutes. The final of the Thomas Cup was between Indonesia and China.

England's women compensated for the defeat of the men's team to China by fairing well in the Uber tournament. They reached the final of the event after defeating Denmark on May 15. Helen Troke gave England an early lead when she defeated Kirsten Larsen in three sets, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4. Her shrewd placements and sharp drops successfully countered the long reach of the Danish girl. Veteran English players Nora Perry and Jane Webster had a difficult match against Liselotte Gottsche and Grethe Mogensen. The Danish women had a narrow defeat in the first set, losing 10-15. But England had a convincing win in the final set winning 15-2. The women's team was due to meet China in the final.
