Background: Member of the new Cypriot Cabinet were sworn into office in the capital, Nicosia, on Wednesday (15 January) in the presence of the island's Greek-Cypriot President Makarios.
The new Government includes several members of the administration overthrown by the anti-Makarios coup of July last year, and is based upon non-party lines. The format of the new Cabinet was announced after intensive consultations between President Makarios and Greek-Cypriot party leaders including interim president Glafkos Cleridos.
Re-appointed to the new Cabinet were Mr. John Christofides, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Andreas Patsalides. Finance Minister and Mr. George Ioannides, Minister for Justice. They joined former colleagues Michael Colocasides, now Commerce and Industry Minister, and Labour Minister Markos Spanos in the nine member Council of Ministers.
