  • Description

Colombian boxer, Rodrigo Valdes, has been preparing to defend his World Boxing Council middleweight crown against a relatively unknown Frenchman, Gratien Tonna. Whoever wins will be the absolute world middleweight champion.

Valdes -- who won his title after knocking out American Benny Briscoe in Monte Carlo in May -- has been training at the Saint Ouen sports complex in Paris.

Gratien, who has worked his way up to fifth place in the world ratings, has been training at Genoa in Italy.

The two men will meet for the title fight in Paris on 30 November.

Valdes was to have met World Boxing Association middleweight champion, Argentinean Carlos Monzon sometime this year. But Monzon retired, soon after winning his crown, so there was never a world title fight.

The winner of this month's fight will therefore be a recognised world champion.

In recent years, the middleweight title has lost most of the appeal it held in the days of Sugar Ray Robinson.

SYNOPSIS: Valdes said he expected to win his fight against Tonna. The Frenchman has been training at Genoa in Italy. He is relatively unknown on the international scene, but has worked his way up to fifth place in the world ratings. On the face of things, the odds are in Valdes' favour.
